Lets talk about world peace!

Yes, International Peace Day was ages ago — but do we really need a specific day to emphasise on the importance of peace? Exactly.

Now I know when getting down to the topic of world peace, wracking your mind for the perfect image of world peace can be rather exhausting due to the countless acts of violence, discrimination, death and suffering we come across on a day to day basis. But if you could close your eyes for a few sweet seconds and imagine a place on earth where people accept one another regardless of their nationality, sexuality, or skin colour — a place where differences are considered a beauty, a place where conflict is resolved through negotiation and understanding rather than with weapons and threats.

Now…a place like that sounds quite peaceful doesn’t it ?

And I believe all of us thrive for this consciously or unconsciously, because if you look back in time history dates some of the most atrocious events to have taken place from plagues to wars that raged on for years. So, if you’re a careful observer you can see that people have been fighting for peace for a very long time, and as we go forwards we see that violence is only increasing. This means that the need for peace is important now more than ever.

While ranting on about peace in the global scale of things, I understand that you and I just reading this through and thinking about attaining world peace seems a bit far-fetched, seems like only an act of god can truly make it happen. I mean yes, we see many advocates on multiple platforms advocating on the need to ensure world peace, yet at the end of it all we cannot help but feel dissatisfied because we see “no real change”.

Well, I believe that you and I have forgotten that change doesn’t happen overnight. It’s a collective act which most importantly starts with us. So, I’m punching letters here to say that you are sitting there reading this and me typing this down — we can be the change the world needs us to be. I’m pretty sure wondering how exactly we can make this happen.

See, its quite simple really, because change of any sort starts with the person sitting next to you or in front of you because if you look around, you can see that violence and conflict persists because people have failed to become humane to the very beings they are co-existing with. But does it have to be that way? I personally don’t think so. I don’t believe it has to be that way, because we can look to our families, friends, and neighbours all over the globe and choose to accept them for who they are rather than the labels society has placed on them. We can choose to put an end to disagreements by emphasising on the long term benefits of resolution.

After all at the end of it all, if you look at the big picture you’d see that life is all about making choices — you either make a bad one or a good one, but eventually you have to make one. So today, right now in this moment let us make an initiative to initiate the spread of global peace and harmony by choosing to be the change the world needs us to be. Because as the age old quote by the famed Mahatma Gandhi goes , “If you want to change the world, start with yourself.”
